About Me

Hi! I'm Christina, and I am a recent graduate from Virginia Tech! I'm in Northern VA now pursuing a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. I'd like to continue what I learned from the Geography of Wine class I took in Spring of 2012, so I'll be posting about different wines and wine events. I would be very grateful for suggestions, and I'm open to expanding my posts to beer and liquor as well!

Tasting - Into Zin

Name: Into Zin

Variety: Zinfandel
Region: Lodi
Country: United States
Year: 2008
Price: $7.95
Shop Review: Into Zin 2008 Zinfandel is a crisp, red wine with plum, blackberry and black cherry influences.  Its spiciness is just the right amount to balance the fruit, so it isn’t too sweet or too dry.  Pairing suggestions include steaks, lamb, hamburgers and chicken marsala.
My Review:  This Zinfandel is a nice ruby color with blackberry aromas.  Upon tasting it, it has black cherry and jammy flavors with a touch of spicyness.

Tasting - Los Alisos Syrah

Name: Los Alisos Syrah

Variety: Syrah
Region: Los Alamos Valley
Country: United States
Year: 2007
Price: $23
Shop Review: Los Alamos Valley is generating great interest among winemakers and wine critics for the quality and character of its Syrah.  The region has a flair for producing wines with the peppery aromatics of a cold climate, and yet displays the rich intensity of warmer locales.  Our Syrah is dark, dense and sinfully opulent with ripe scents of blueberries, white pepper and earth.
My Review:  This Syrah is a very dark ruby with black raspberry aromas.  Its taste is very fruit-forward with flavors of dark fruits, yet it had a surprisingly light mouthfeel.

Tasting - Three Rivers Malbec-Merlot

Name: Three Rivers Malbec-Merlot

Variety: 50% Malbec, 50% Merlot
Region: Columbia Valley
Country: United States
Year: 2006
Price: $27
Shop Review: The Malbec was sourced from Gamache Vineyards and the Merlot portion from Dionysus Vineyard.  The Malbec was harvested on October 6th and the Merlot was brought in on September 5th.  All of this fruit was hand harvested.  The Malbec was destemmed and crushed into a small open-top fermentor where it was pumped over twice daily.  The Merlot was pumped over in stainless steel tanks.  Primary fermentation lasted, on average, seven days.  At this time the skins were gently pressed off and fermentation was completed in barrel.  Malolactic fermentation occurred in 29% new French and Hungarian oak.  While aging in oak barrels the wines were racked every three months to naturally clarify the wine.
My Review:  This wine both smelled and tasted of blackberries and was dry.  Something was off in this wine.  It was hot and something else seemed out of balance.  It is definitely not worth the price to me.  I think I can find better wines for $20 less!

Tasting - Obvio Malbec

Name: Obvio Malbec

Variety: Malbec
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2010
Price: $13
Shop Review: This carefully crafted Malbec from San Carlos, Valle de Uco encapsulates the vibrancy and soul of Argentinean life.  Obvio’s Malbec excites the eye with its deep violet tones and tangoes on the palate with an array of red and black fruits.  This is an easy drinking style of wine to be enjoyed on all occasions, and excellent when paired with meats, pasta and hard cheeses.
My Review:  This wine both smelled and tasted of blackberries and was slightly dry.  It was good, but it was nothing remarkable because it was so simple.

Tasting - Doña Sol Merlot

Name: Doña Sol Merlot

Variety: Merlot
Region: Central Valley
Country: United States
Year: 2008
Price: $8
Shop Review: Everything you’d expect from a California Merlot – classic plumy fruit aromas on the nose with just a touch of spice and tobacco.  Medium-bodied on the palate with plump, ripe fruit and soft tannins that make this an easy-drinking wine.
My Review:  This wine has musty, stale citrus fruit aromas.  It tastes of grapefruits with a dry finish.

Tasting - Faraway Farm Cabernet Sauvignon

Name: Faraway Farm Cabernet Sauvignon

Variety: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Western Cape
Country: South Africa
Year: 2008
Price: $15
Shop Review: There is a special place in Africa, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, where soaring mountains dominate the stark landscape.  Tucked away behind these mountains you will find our vineyard.  This is the home of Faraway Farm.  Our Cabernet Sauvignon will spoil you with rich flavors of ripe blackberry and plums.  Drink with close friends.
My Review: This wine was a dark red, almost brown.  There are aromas and flavors of blackberry.  This wine had harsh tannins and an oaky/woody taste.

Tasting - Robert Mondavi Solaire Pinot Noir

Name: Robert Mondavi Solaire Pinot Noir

Variety: 100% Pinot Noir
Region: Santa Lucia Highlands
Country: United States
Year: 2008
Price: $21
Shop Review: Our Solaire by Robert Mondavi 2008 Pinot Noir shows off deep, complex flavors of black cherry and red raspberries, with hints of rose petal, violet, and red licorice.  A background of smoky cinnamon, vanilla, and five-spice nuances comes from aging in toasted oak barrels.  This wine has a nice weight on the palate with a lush texture and smooth, silky tannins that support the flavors through the lingering finish.
My Review: This ruby red wine has aromas of grapefruit.  Upon tasting it, it seemed out of balance with a bite at the end.  Keeping in mind that I tasted this wine at a blow-out sale, it is quite possible that it was either improperly stored or is past its time.

Tasting - Les Traverses de Fontanès Cabernet Sauvignon

Name: Les Traverses de Fontanès Cabernet Sauvignon

Variety: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Languedoc-Roussillon
Country: France
Year: 2009
Price: $9.95
Shop Review: Being rebellious seems to come naturally to a man of such innate talent, and the elegance of his wines are proof enough in a region where bigger is often considered better.  Make no mistake, raw terroir and spicy garrigue abound in these wines, with rich, juicy fruit and silky tannins.
My Review: This wine has a ruby color and slightly musty and hay aromas.  It has a strawberry and spicy taste with musty undertones and a musty finish, and I don’t even know if musty is something you can taste!  If rebellious means making a wine somehow taste fruity, spicy and musty at the same time, mission accomplished.

Tasting - Tiki Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Tiki Sauvignon Blanc

Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Marlborough
Country: Australia
Year: 2010
Price: $11.95
Shop Review: A powerful nose of peach, citrus and passionfruit aromas complexed with some sweaty notes.  Pungent and powerful aromatics – sweet citrus, meyer lemon and grapefruit, juiced green apples then a tropical note of pineapple core and passion fruit.  Intense with excellent mouth feel and texture leading to a long lingering finish enhanced by vibrant acidity.  Finishing dry, with a firm acidity that is well balanced by a touch of residual sugar and a solid fruit core that reflects the aromatics.
My Review: I definitely did not get all of those complex aromas and flavors!  I need to work on my sniffy sniff skills and train my palate up before I could ever get some of those specific descriptions.  This wine was a straw color.  The smell of pineapple was the main aroma I could sense.  It also tasted of pineapple and had a slightly sour finish.

Tasting - Gran Crucero Limited Edition 2008

Name: Gran Crucero Limited Edition 2008

Variety: 50% Syrah, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carmenere
Region: Colchagua Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2008
Price: $25.95
Shop Review: Deep ruby.  Wild aromas of cassis, dark chocolate, smoky herbs and earth, along with a touch of incense.  Then supple and pliant, offering juicy red currant and bitter cherry, smoke and licorice flavors.  The sappy finish lingers with good authority and echoes the smoky note.
My Review: This wine is ruby in color.  It had aromas of dark cherry with notes of spiciness.  It had slight dark chocolate flavors and was rather dry.  I wasn’t wowed in any way, and believe that I could find many wines as good as this at a cheaper price.  I kind of think you are paying for the colorful description they provided!

Tasting - Crucero Syrah Reserve

Name: Crucero Syrah Reserve

Variety: Syrah
Region: Colchagua Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2008
Price: $13.95
Shop Review: Syrah, the legendary grape of the Norhtern Rhone AOC’s of Cote Rotie, Hermitage, and Cornas delivers ample flavor for a reasonable price.  This Reserve Syrah is aged in Frehnch oak for 6 months.  The wine exhibits ripe black fruit flavors and a touch of white pepper.  This medium bodied red wine will age well for 3-5 years.  Serve with red meat, game, and stews.
My Review: This wine is ruby in color with a slight purple tinge.  For some reason, there is a slight green apple aroma, along with oakiness.  It has a flavor completely different from its aroma with dark fruit and dryness.

Dinner - Palisades (Virginia)

Monticello A.V.A. Map

Our second attempt at Palisades was a lot more successful!  We quickly found the restaurant, and we were ready for another delicious dinner!  I love Virginia wines, so I was excited to try them again after having learned so much about tasting.  I had never had any of the foods before, so I was eager to see how they tasted alone and with each of the wines.

The wines were specifically from the Monticello A.V.A.  According to the sheet given to us before dinner, the most popular grapes grown in Virginia since 200 are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Cabernet Franc.  As of 2011, there were 192 wineries in Virginia (an increase from 163 in 2009).

The wines are as follows: Jefferson Vineyards Chardonnay 2010 (left), Lovingston Merlot 2007 (middle), and White Hall Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (right).

The foods are as follows: Beef Potato Goat Cheese Roulade, Spoon Bread, and Collard Greens.

The delicious food and wines!
Once we received our food and wine, I tasted each wine alone and with each food.  I concluded that the wines were organized in a way that it went best with the food directly in front of it.

First was the Jefferson Vineyards Chardonnay 2010.  It was a nice golden color with crisp pear aromas.  Upon tasting it, it was tart, acidic, and slightly hot with pear flavors.  I’m not a huge fan of Chardonnays, so I was not expecting much from it.  I was pleasantly surprised with how the flavors changed while paring it with the Roulade.  It tasted much sweeter, more in balance, and many fruit flavors were brought out.  Now, I will be more willing to try Chardonnay with different foods!  On the other hand, the spoon bread seemed overpower the flavors of the Chardonnay.  With the collard greens, I originally thought it was the wine that tasted vegetal, but it was the aftertaste of the greens that made everything taste vegetal, spicy, and like fish food.  Overall, the beef and Chardonnay was a fantastic pairing!

Jefferson Vineyards Chardonnay 2010
Second up was the Lovingston Merlot 2007, and it is dark ruby in color.  It had an unknown smell, and if acidic can be considered an aroma, that’s how I would describe it.  Overall, it was just off.  It had some tart dark cherry flavors, heavy tannins, and was dry.  It had a cleaning solution finish.  Something was wrong with the particular wine, and I don’t know if something happened to the bottle, or something when wrong in the winemaking process.  With the beef, it was oaky, and somehow drier than it was alone.  With the spoon bread, the cleaning solution taste was toned down, and the cherry and oaky flavors were brought out.  With the greens, it was oaky and dry, but again the flavor of the greens overpowered the wine.

Lovingston Merlot 2007
Last, but not least, was the White Hall Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, and this wine was also dark ruby in color.  It had nice dark fruit and cherry aromas.  It had lovely cherry flavors.  Overall, the wine had a great balance between sweetness and dryness, and the whole wine was very well-produced.  With the beef, more dark fruit flavors were brought out.  The spoon bread slightly toned down the cherry flavors. With the collard greens, more cheery flavors were brought out had a dry finish.

White Hall Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Once again, Palisades didn’t disappoint, and neither did Virginia!  I would highly recommend attending a Wines of the World dinner, or even just to have dinner.  I’m sure they would love to recommend a wine with any of their menu items.  In a few weeks, we will be attending the Pinot Noir dinner, so I am hoping to have 3 fantastic red wines!

Tasting - Crucero Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Crucero Sauvignon Blanc

Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Curico Valley

Price: $9.95
Shop Review: Sauvignon Blanc is the fabled grape of both Bordeaux Blanc and the Loire Valley (Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume).  This varietal exhibits aromas of musk melon, pine, and grass.  The finish is zesty and citrus-like, and goes very well with chicken and seafood.
My Review: This Sauvignon Blanc is pale hay in color.  It had aromas of melon, pineapple and mangos.  It tastes like sweet pineapple and other tropical fruits, with a slightly tart taste as well.  Overall, it was very tropical in both aroma and taste.

Tasting - Henry Lagarde Cabernet Sauvignon

Name: Henry Lagarde Cabernet Sauvignon

Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2008
Price: $17.95
Shop Review: Cherry color, almost black towards the centre of the glass.  The bouquet is a complex mixture of fruity and spicy sensations, with some notes of smoke and minerals.  Full-mouthed and highly structured.  Its ripe tannins give unctuosity and persistence to this excellent wine.
My Review: This wine is a lovely dark ruby in color and has a heavy black pepper and cherry aroma.  For some reason, I smelled a slight scent of salami, so it is likely I had a similarly structured wine and salami at some point, and the aromas just reminded me of this.  Upon tasting the wine, it was very dry and peppery.

Tasting - LaMadrid Malbec

Name: LaMadrid Malbec

Variety: 100% Malbec
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2008
Price: $13.95
Shop Review: 90 points, Wine Advocate.  Fragrant aromas of Asian spices, incense, cassis, tobacco and violets inform the nose of a layered, spicy, nicely balanced wine with a forward personality.
My Review: This Malbec is a dark ruby, with very thin legs.  It has a complex aroma.  I smelled a mix of dark cherry, floral scents, dark fruits and some sweetness.  However, it’s taste was very different and tasted very dry with tobacco flavors.
